SkepticalScience makes short work of climate change denial

February 20, 2011

Another hat tip to John Cook and Skeptical Science, the excellent web site he has patiently built over the years. If you aren’t familiar with it, there are first class explanations of climate change science, presented in basic and intermediate technical formats. What I love about the site is that nobody is asked to take the word of the authors (I’ve contributed a few basic articles myself). Every statement, graph, figure and claim is backed up by direct links to the primary science so you can see for yourself what the science is doing, what results it has achieved, and what misrepresentations are made by those with interests that are not best served by being entirely honest or fully informed.

Now, reposted directly from the Skeptical Science site, here is a new and welcome addition – quick links to all the cliched arguments that make discussion so very unconstructive. I’ll let John explain…

Link to skeptic rebuttals with short URLs

Sometimes you’re in the middle of online discussion, someone throws an old debunked skeptic argument at you and you need to link to a pertinent rebuttal. It can be a hassle tracking down the URL (especially if you need to convert it to a short URL for tweeting). Well, there’s now a short, memorable URL for every rebuttal to a skeptic argument on Skeptical Science. So for instance, if someone insists global warming is caused by the sun, just send them to:

Or if they argue that past climate change proves current warming must be natural, just give them:

Nice and short and in most cases, easy to remember. I’m already using the short URLs myself as a short cut when I wish to go straight to a rebuttal without clicking through all the links. All the short URLs are listed at:

Or for those too lazy to click the link (which is the whole point really), here is the total list of short URLs:

John Cook is a hero – he has put so much work and effort into his site that it has become a stunning resource on all things climate science.

Interestingly I have been involved in several debates with climate skeptics where Johns site has bee referenced and the skeptic comeback is that its a blog and can’t be taken credibility.

Now there is irony for you.

Aye, Lazarus – shine the mirror back in their faces and they get all outraged in a fake sort of way!

I tell you, it can be like wrestling with blancmange at times – not that I have done that myself, but I have enough of a writer’s imagination to figure what it would entail!

    Cheers – John

    Wrestling with blancmange?

I’ll keep that amusing image in the back of my mind. Could be a boon to bring it to the fore at some very frustrating times – far too frequent frustrating times.
